About the Internship:

The UCT HIVMHRU is seeking motivated students from diverse backgrounds to join their clinical research internship programme. This opportunity provides a deep dive into the world of HIV and mental health research in and around Cape Town. There are two intakes each year, with four interns per semester. The first semester runs from January to June, while the second spans from July to December. All candidates will be selected for both intakes by December 2023, with a total of 10 positions available annually. Interns are expected to commit 8 hours per week, distributed over two 4-hour days.

Who Should Apply?

This unpaid internship is ideal for recent graduates eager to gain experience and exposure in mental health research and interventions. During their internship, candidates will have the opportunity to access short courses and research programs within the HIVMHRU.

Benefits of the Internship:

Upon successful completion of the internship, candidates will receive:

• A certificate of completion (awarded for >80% attendance)
• A letter of recommendation from the internship coordinator(s)

Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:

Interns will engage in various aspects of research and gain valuable experience in tasks such as:

• Preparation of research materials (consent forms, intervention activities, workbooks, etc.)
• Transcriptions and translation of intervention sessions
• Assisting with financial reconciliation of participant reimbursements
• Management of bio-marker specimens (viral load samples, dried blood spots, etc.)
• Assisting with participant retention and tracking
• Content development for HIVMHRU website and social media platforms
• Conducting site visits to research offices located at primary care facilities in the Cape Town area
• Assisting with day-to-day activities at research sites
• Participating in clinical supervision of interventionists and research staff
• Attending debriefing sessions with project directors and clinical psychologists

Requirements:

To be eligible for this internship, candidates must:

• Hold a minimum NQF Level 8 qualification (Honours or four-year degree) in a health or social science-related field.

Skills and Qualifications:

While not mandatory, the following skills and qualifications are advantageous:

• Excellent command of two or three official languages of South Africa.
• Demonstrated excellent writing and communication skills.
• Capability to work in a multicultural team environment.
